Daniel Alvarado, Director of Development for Children’s Hope, attended the 2018 Giving Tuesday ribbon cutting hosted in Lubbock, Texas by United Supermarkets. Given Tuesday refers to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year that signals the beginning of the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was initiated by the 92nd Street Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association and the United Nations Foundation in New York in 2012 as an answer to the commercialization of the holiday season.

This year, Giving Tuesday falls on November 27th. Over the past 6 years Giving Tuesday has impacted over 30,000 organizations in seventy-one countries across the globe. Lubbock, Texas is among the worldwide leaders of generosity. During the ribbon cutting and press conference, a special thanks went out to the Ahlström Angels within the Community Foundation of West Texas for helping transform how people think, speak, and participate in giving.

This year, there are sixty-four organizations that represent Lubbock helping in efforts to raise funds. Mary Myers of United Supermarkets stated: "Every single year, when Given Tuesday comes back around, we are reminded of the true blessing that it is to work for United Supermarkets—to work for a company for who almost 103 years has really believed in actively supporting the communities that we serve. It goes far beyond financial support; it goes far beyond volunteer hours. It is a foundational promise of the company." Giving Tuesday LBK will be able to set up in all 11 locations in Lubbock, plus 2 United Supermarkets in each of the following cities: Plainview, Slaton, Levelland, and Post, TX. Among the attendees at today's event was the mayor of Lubbock, Dan Pope who counseled everyone to: "Take Time to be grateful. We have so much even on our worst days."
